Exmatriculation

Switch to main content of the section

Do you want to take a semester off or drop out of your studies?

Here you will find information for a leave of absence and inspiration for a change of degree programme

Upon application, students can exmatriculate and thus terminate their enrolment. Reasons for this can be

  • The completion of the degree programme after all academic achievements have been completed
  • A change of university
  • Interruption of studies
  • Giving up studies, e.g. after finally failing an examination

After re-enrolment in the coming semester, exmatriculation can only take place at the end of the semester or on the day after the start of the semester. This also means that the semester is counted as a university semester on the certificate of exmatriculation and the certificate of enrolment. Likewise, no more academic achievements may be made after exmatriculation.

If exmatriculation takes place after the start of the semester (but no later than 15 May for the summer semester or 15 November for the winter semester), a refund of the semester fee is only possible if the Uni-Card has not yet been validated for the semester in question.

How exmatriculation works

  1. Download, complete and sign the application for exmatriculation
  2. Send the PDF application to the Student Office via the contact form (please enter @uni-bielefeld.de email address as the sender address) or print it out and hand it in on site.

I am no longer enrolled. What now?

  • Semester fee (not paid or paid too little, 10 € late fee not yet paid, incorrect reason for payment)
  • Proof of health insurance missing
  • Documents/evidence required for enrolment incomplete
  • All academic achievements completed and certificate collected

Please re-enrol within the specified deadlines and pay any late fees that may be incurred.

If you do not properly re-enrol within the specified deadlines, including any late fees, you will be exmatriculated ex officio.

There can be various reasons for ex officio exmatriculation, e.g.

  • Missing payment of fees (social or semester fee)
  • Your health insurance provider has informed you that you are no longer insured with them or have not paid your contributions.
  • Reasons relating to examination regulations.
  • You have not submitted missing documents due to a change of registration or enrolment.
  • You are still enrolled in a degree programme that has been or will be discontinued and no longer have the opportunity to successfully complete this programme.

Prior to this exmatriculation, the University will send several reminders via the email address provided about the exmatriculation deadlines and the late fee and inform you of the impending exmatriculation.
If you have been officially exmatriculated but wish to remain enrolled, you must contact the Student Office as soon as possible within the deadline for legal remedies (see notification) for clarification.

If you let the deadline for appeal expire, you must reapply for the relevant degree programmes within the applicable deadlines for applications. Examination achievements that you have already completed may be recognised under certain circumstances.

However, you can also send an application for exmatriculation to the Student Office via the contact form (please enter @uni-bielefeld.de email address as the sender address) or hand in a printed copy on site.

The certificate of exmatriculation will be made available to you as confirmation in the service area of the application and status portal. You will find the document under Certificates and can print or download it from there.

You no longer need to be enrolled or re-enrolled for the coming semester to wait for examination results or apply for a certificate. It is important that all examinations have been completed by the end of this semester. However, you can remain enrolled in the semester in which you receive your certificate if you wish.

If you do not respond to the re-enrolment request and the notification emails, you will be automatically exmatriculated around mid-November (retroactive to 30 September) or around mid-May (retroactive to 31 March).

However, you can also send an application for exmatriculation to the Student Office via the contact form (please enter @uni-bielefeld.de email address as the sender address) or hand in a printed copy on site.

Until the beginning of the semester (31 March / 30 September), the student office will refund the full semester fee upon de-registration.

From the start of the semester (1 April / 1 October), the AStA [Student Union] will refund the amount for the semester ticket on a pro rata basis in the event of exmatriculation. The AStA fee will not be refunded. Refunds are made via the AStA secretary's office in L4-121 and are possible throughout the semester.

The Studierendenwerk fee will be refunded by the student office by 15 May / 15 November if you are exmatriculated and have not completed any coursework or examinations by the above-mentioned dates or have submitted a notice of admission from another university.

In the event of exmatriculation after 15 May / 15 November, a refund of the Studierendenwerk fee is no longer possible.

Students who transfer to Bielefeld University in the current semester and already have a Semesterdeutschlandticket must pay the full semester fee at Bielefeld University and contact their previous university for a refund.

Students on leave of absence are exempt from all fees unless they wish to purchase the ticket and/or the academic achievements of the Studierendenwerk [Association for Student Affairs].

This information can also be found on the application for exmatriculation, which you can download from the forms section of the student office.

If you have submitted your enrolment application but have not yet paid any semester fees and do not wish to commence your studies, please send a short message to the Student Office stating your personal details and indicating that you are withdrawing your enrolment. It is not possible to withdraw your enrolment application by telephone.
