Outpatient medicine has always played an important role in healthcare. In most cases, the first contact with the healthcare system takes place in the practice of a registered doctor. The type of treatment and communication with the patient sometimes determine the success of the treatment or the further history of the treatment and the patient's compliance. As many illnesses that required hospitalisation years ago can now increasingly be treated on an outpatient basis, the relevance of outpatient medicine in healthcare is also increasing. Last but not least, in view of demographic change, the outpatient sector is faced with the challenge of ensuring that the population receives care close to home in the long term.
The Faculty of Medicine is therefore particularly keen to strengthen outpatient medicine and raise its profile in view of the numerous challenges it faces. This means integrating relevant content into the training of future students and specifically promoting opportunities for assignments in outpatient practice during their studies. At the same time, it is important to work on the numerous questions from the practice of registered doctors in a cooperative process within research.
Outpatient medicine is a particular focus of student training. The prerequisite for this is the close cooperation between the Faculty of Medicine and practising doctors in the teaching practice network.
In order to strengthen research in outpatient care, research practices from the Ostwesfalen-Lippe region are being recruited as cooperation partners to implement joint research projects.
